Pulses

Pulses are a very broad group of foods with valuable nutrients for the organism. They belong to the Fabaceae or Leguminosae plant family, the third largest group of plants on the planet and one believed to date back to about 90 million years ago. Used in human food for over ten thousand years, these leguminous plants constitute a rich source of proteins and essential amino acids that serve as ideal complements for cereals. They are ingredients that provide a means for manufacturers to increase the total percentage of protein in their food formulas. The use of these raw materials as functional foods is currently on the increase in both human and animal nutrition. With regard to their use in animal nutrition, legumes have become an essential ingredient in the pet food manufactured for dogs and cats, particularly in grain-free products. Pulses such as lentils, chickpeas and peas have been used in animal food since 1990 due to their abundant provision of vegetable and natural proteins and slowly digested complex carbohydrates and their high dietary fibre content.

Lentils are some of the most digestible legumes. They contain folic acid (vitamin B9), they are rich in fat-free proteins, fibre and antioxidants. These nutritious legumes also provide significant amounts of phosphorus, iron, copper and manganese.
