They belong to the <strong><em>Fabaceae<\/em><\/strong> or <strong><em>Leguminosae<\/em><\/strong> plant family, the third largest group of plants on the planet and one believed to date back to about 90 million years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Used in human <strong>food<\/strong> for over ten thousand years, these <strong>leguminous plants<\/strong> constitute a rich source of proteins and essential amino acids that serve as ideal complements for cereals. They are ingredients that provide a means for manufacturers to increase the total percentage of protein in their <strong>food<\/strong> formulas.<\/p>\n<p>The use of these <strong>raw materials<\/strong> as <strong>functional foods<\/strong> is currently on the increase in both <strong>human<\/strong> and animal <strong>nutrition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>With regard to their use in <strong>animal nutrition<\/strong>, legumes have become an essential ingredient in the <strong>pet food<\/strong> manufactured for dogs and cats, particularly in <strong>grain-free<\/strong> products.<\/p>\n<p>Pulses such as <strong>lentils<\/strong>, <strong>chickpeas<\/strong> and <strong>peas<\/strong> have been used in <strong>animal food<\/strong> since 1990 due to their abundant provision of <strong>vegetable<\/strong> and natural proteins and slowly digested <strong>complex carbohydrates<\/strong> and their high <strong>dietary fibre<\/strong> content.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pulses\u00a0are a very broad group of foods with valuable nutrients for the organism.
